Club History

Football has been played in the Belmullet area since the early days of the 1900s, when teams from Aughoose, Belmullet, Inver and Kilmore took part in parish leagues. In 1927, a team was formed in Belmullet, and it was named “Out of Our Way”. For several years the team travelled to Crossmolina and Ballina to play challenge games.

In 1936, the Belmullet team entered the North Mayo Junior championship for the first time. The met Lacken in the final, and after two great games emerged victorious. They then beat Charlestown in the county semi-final, but lost the final to Westport by one point. While the club struggled to put a team together at times during the 1940s and 50s, they again won the North Mayo Junior championship in 1944, and went on to went the County Junior title, beating Murrisk by 0-11 to 1-4 to record their first major success as a club. A year later, they played Castlebar Mitchels in the County Senior final, but were well beaten by 3-9 to 0-2.

During the 1950s, North Mayo Junior titles were won in 1953 and 1954, on both occasions following replay wins over Crossmolina. Brendan Lynch, a member of Roscommon’s double All-Ireland winning team of 1943 and 1944, was a member of those teams, he was a Garda stationed in the Erris area at the time. The 1960s began with a win in the County Minor A championship in 1962, beating Ballyhaunis in the final – future Mayo captain Johnny Carey was a member of this team - and this was followed by another North Mayo Junior win in 1963. Further North Mayo Junior titles were annexed in 1968 and 1973, with Seamus Cafferkey as captain on both occasions. 1973 also saw the return of the County Junior title to the club for the first time in 29 years, as they overcame Kilmaine in the final, and twelve months later they landed the Intermediate title with a 1-12 to 0-8 win over Louisburgh.

The emergence of a crop of good young footballers saw the club contest an U21 A County final in 1977, where they lost out to Davitts in a replay. This heralded a period where Belmullet were competitive in the senior championship, and in 1981 they reached the Senior final, where they lost out to Garrymore in Ballina by 1-9 to 1-5.

During the 1980s and 90s Belmullet drifted back into the Junior grade, and in 1999 and 2001, they won County Junior titles, beating Kilmaine and Kilmeena respectively in the finals. Later, they won the Connacht Club Junior title, beating Salthill by 0-18 to 2-6 in the final, and they went all the way to the All-Ireland final of the competition, where they lost to Drumgoon of Cavan.

Since the turn of the century, the club have enjoyed much success at underage level. The County Minor A title was won in 2003, and U14 B titles were annexed in 2000 and 2013. The U21 B title came to the club in 1996, and in 2017 Belmullet reached their second U21 A final, where they lost to Westport.

Off the field, they highlight for the club was the opening of their state of the art facilities in Tallagh. The development comprises two full sized pitches, four changing rooms, a first aid room, offices, a boardroom, and a large function room. The opening was marked by a challenge game between Mayo and Cavan, and the facilities were also used in 2010 when the club hosted the Comórtas Peile Na Gaeltachta finals, which attracted a large number of people to the Erris area.

Many players from the club have represented Mayo over the years. Willie Joe Padden enjoyed a long career in the green and red, winning two All-Stars in 1985 and 1989. His son Billie Joe was also a regular for Mayo for much of the 2000s, and along with club-mate Stephen Carolan won a NFL medal in 2001. Chris Barrett has played with Mayo, winning An U21 medal in 2006, and appearing in All-Ireland finals in 2016 and 2017. He also won an All-Star award in 2017. Current team members Eoin O Donoghue, Ryan O Donoghue and Evan Ivers are now playing with Mayo County Team. Another former clubman, Tom Reilly, served as Chairman of Cavan GAA Board in recent years.

ClG Béal An Mhuirthead returned to the Intermediate Final for the first time since our only win in the competition in 1974, on October 20th 2018 V Burrishoole. CLG Béal An Mhuirthead reached Senior level in 2018 .
